In Vedic traditions, the Guru-disciple relationship is of immense importance. Finding a true spiritual master is a great blessing, a fortunate gift in one’s life. Guru Dakshina is a sacred offering made by a disciple to their Guru, as a gesture of respect and gratitude for the wisdom and guidance shared. It is not about the size or value of the offering, but about the depth of gratitude and recognition of the Guru’s transformative role in one's life and spiritual journey. A disciple may choose to offer Guru Dakshina at any time that feels meaningful — be it on their birthday, an anniversary, the birth of a child, a personal milestone, or during special occasions like Guru Purnima, Shivaratri, or their Guru’s birthday. This offering serves as a reminder of the immense grace received and the ongoing blessings of the Guru in their life.
